On October 6, 1889, a Frenchman named Joseph Oller made smut history by opening the world’s most famous burlesque club in Paris’ 18th arrondissement: the Moulin Rouge. Named for the red windmill on top of the building, it is cornerstone of burlesque culture and very possibly the birthplace of the striptease.

I cannot recommend reading this article enough: it’s absolutely fascinating. A woman left her apartment in Paris completely untouched after World War II but still paid the rent up until she died in 2010 - after she died, the apartment was unlocked. It’s like a time capsule.
